I really enjoy working in black and white, and my charcoal drawings are often the start of my paintings. The nature of charcoal allows me to fully concentrate on the image’s composition and its tonal values, and allows the image to be extremely free and expressive.
I feel that the black and white nature of drawing in charcoal helps to portray the darker, more haunting side of myths, folklore and fairytales, which I am fascinated by.
